WAYNE COUNTY (WWJ) - Northville Downs was granted a one-day delay to the start of the racing season after officials said there weren't enough horses entered to hold this weekend's race date on March 12.
The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) approved the request made by management at the Metro Detroit racetrack and the Michigan Harness Horsemen's Association on Wednesday; officials said a live make-up race may be scheduled for later in the season to make up for the cancelled date.
A simulcasting will still be offered at Northville Downs on March 11 and live racing will start of March 13.
“We wish for a successful year for Northville Downs and the Michigan Harness Horsemen’s Association and for many hours of fun for the fans who enjoy live horse racing,” said Henry Williams, MGCB executive director in a press release.
Just over 60 live Standardbred horseracing events are scheduled in two groups at the race track in Wayne County on Fridays and Saturdays: the first session of races is scheduled from March 12 to June 25. The second session begins Sept. 9 and runs through Dec. 17.
At least eight live horse races will be scheduled on each race date, not to exceed 16 races per day in accordance to the MGCB guidelines.
Races are expected to start at 7:30 p.m.
