ROMEO (WWJ) -- A woman who worked at a skilled nursing facility in northern Macomb County is facing felony charges for alleged neglect that authorities say led to a resident's death.
Jessica Struhar, 26, of Macomb County was arraigned in 42nd District Court in Romeo on Friday on one count each of Vulnerable Adult Abuse - second degree, and Intentionally Placing False Information in a Medical Record.
According to the Michigan Attorney General's Office, Struhar was working as a Certified Nursing Assistant (GNA) at Medilodge of Richmond in 2021 when she "ignored multiple standing orders" having to do with a resident’s plan of care.
Her alleged neglect, the AG said, led to the 58-year-old resident choking during mealtime, which ultimately led to the resident's death.
It's also alleged, authorizes said, that Struhar lied about what happened — making several false medical records entries about the victim’s care, while EMS and hospital staff were trying to save the man's life.
“The overwhelming majority of those who provide long-term care in Michigan do so with integrity and respect for their important role,” said AG Dana Nessel, in a statement. “But when there is a serious breach in the responsibility entrusted to them, there are criminal consequences, and my office will seek accountability.”
Struhar faces up to four years in prison for each count. She is due back in court for a Probable Cause Conference on Oct. 17.
