DETROIT (WWJ) - A 43-year-old woman from Oak Park is in critical condition after she was found with a open head injury on the shoulder of the Southfield Freeway in Detroit early Saturday morning, troopers said.

Michigan State Police are now searching for any witnesses who may have seen what happened in the suspected traffic crash that occurred sometime in the early morning hours of April 29.

Troopers were dispatched to the scene just after 6:30 a.m. on north M-39 Freeway at Schoolcraft Rd. after a 911 caller reported seeing the woman lying on right shoulder near the entrance ramp.

MSP and EMS personal arrived to find a 43-year-old female from Oak Park in the roadway with an open head injury.

She was taken to Sinai-Grace Hospital where troopers said she is in critical condition.

According to MSP Lt. Mike Shaw, investigators have not yet discovered why the victim was in the freeway, but they are working on reviewing camera footage and other evidence to help piece together what happened.

Troopers described the incident as a traffic crash in an update to social media, but the exact cause remains unclear.

Anyone with any information about the incident has been asked to call the Michigan State Police at 313-456-0020.

At this time, troopers have blocked the right two lanes, as well as the service drive at Kendal St., as they continue their investigation.
