Oakland County assisted living facility shut down over resident care violations

CLARKSTON (WWJ) -- A new report has led to the closure of an Oakland County group home.

State officials from the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) have shut down Heather Pines assisted living in Clarkston due to staffing level violations and resident care issues.

An investigation into the facility -- which is owned by Caremore Assisted Living -- revealed that residents were repeatedly left on the floor after falling out of bed during the overnight staff shift.

Many also sat in soiled diapers and other terrible conditions for hours at a time.

In perhaps the most extreme incident, workers failed to notice on July 29 that a woman "had passed away for hours." It was only brought to the staff's attention when a member of the woman's family arrived and found her slumped over in a wheelchair, cold to the touch.

Eleven residents have since been removed from Heather Pines, but were reportedly relocated to another Caremore Assisted Living facility.

The owners of Caremore Assisted Living blame the violations on bad employees, and claim they are working to fix the issues.
