'We have been watching': Oakland County man charged with threatening Whitmer

LANSING, Mich. (WWJ) -- An Oakland County man is facing multiple charges for allegedly sending threatening messages directed at Gov. Gretchen Whitmer earlier this year.

Attorney General Dana Nessel announced Monday Kevin Dawe of Clarkston, has been charged with two counts of malicious use of telecommunications services -- each punishable by up to six months in jail and/or a fine of up to $1,000.

The charges stem from two separate incidents back in January and March, the AG's office said. Dawe, 31, allegedly sent vulgar, threatening messages through web submissions to the governor's Constituent Services Department.

Nessel's office provided a censored excerpt of one of Dawe's messages to the governor:

"Take care… and maybe shelter. We have been watching and know your every step. You f*** with everyday hard-working Americans, we F*** WITH YOU."

The attorney general's office did not disclose whether that message was sent in January or March, and it was unclear who Dawe was referring to when he said "we."

"There is a fine line between airing grievances with an elected official and threatening their life or their loved ones," Nessel said in a press release. "My office stands ready to pursue criminal charges against anyone who crosses that line."

Dawe turned himself in at the Michigan State Police Metro North Post on Aug. 19 and posted a $500 cash bond, Nessel's office said. Dawe is awaiting the announcement of court dates in Eaton County 56A District Court.
