(WWJ) The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) is looking to fill several full-time positions as it gears up for winter.
“The winter season will be here soon. These are the front-line workers who handle the day-to-day maintenance necessary to keep our roads open and in good shape,” RCOC Managing Director Dennis Kolar stated in a press release. “This is truly a great way to be a vital part of your community and to make a difference in the lives of tens of thousands of your neighbors every day…”
The RCOC tells WWJ that the minimum wage for the position for the first six months is $20 per hour. Once an employee completes the six-month probationary period, the minimum wage jumps to $22 per hour.
Employees would perform a variety of duties including salting, plowing, traffic control, pothole patching, roadside cleanup, and working with basin and pavement-repair crews and tree crews. The position will also require employees to operate vehicles larger than 26,000 lbs. and heavy construction equipment like excavators and loaders. Several videos are available on the RCOC’s website to further explain what each job does (scroll down to the “full-time positions heading”)
The RCOC’s job posting said applicants must have a valid Michigan driver’s license, and a minimum of a high school diploma or GED be willing to work their “fair share of overtime” and accept placement at any of the RCOC’s garage locations-- Milford Twp., Springfield Twp., Orion Twp., Waterford Twp., Southfield and Troy.
Benefits include health insurance and employer-paid dental and life insurance; paid holidays, vacation, and sick time; a tuition-reimbursement program; and a retirement package for vested employees, among other benefits.
To apply, go to the RCOC’s website “Careers” tab and fill out an application.
