DETROIT (WWJ) – Campaign season is in the homestretch and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will be looking to get a boost ahead of the Nov. 8 election when former President Barack Obama comes to town this weekend.

Obama will be in Detroit Saturday for a Get Out the Vote rally at Renaissance High School. The event, hosted by the Michigan Democratic Party, is scheduled for noon.

Whitmer and Obama will be joined by Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist and several other Democrats “up and down the ballot,” according to a release for the event.

Speakers at Saturday’s event will focus on abortion, voting rights and public education, all of which are “at risk in Michigan,” according to organizers of the event.

Saturday’s event comes just days after Whitmer squared off with Republican challenger Tudor Dixon in the second and final gubernatorial debate on the campus of Oakland University.
