HOLLAND (WWJ) - A West Michigan firefighter was in the right place at the right time after she spotted a barn fire and helped an 81-year-old man to safety -- all on her day off from work on Friday.
Fire officials in Holland said the blaze was reported around 1:25 p.m. on Nov. 4 on property located in the 200 block of Waverly Road, Mlive reported.
An off-duty firefighter was driving in the area while on her way to an appointment when she noticed flames coming from a barn.
After getting closer, fire officials said she realized a lawn tractor had ignited and an 81-year-old man was still inside the barn as it was burning.
The firefighter immediately called 911 to report the blaze and jumped into action, protect the elderly man “from further harm.”
Fire crews quickly arrived at the scene and were able to subdue the flames. While the blaze destroyed some items in the barn, the overall structure was saved, officials said via Mlive.
