BAY COUNTY (WWJ) - Police responding to a stabbing incident at a Bay County trailer park shot a suspect after he allegedly open fired at officers in an early morning stand off.
The Hampton Township Public Safety Department said in a press release that they were called out to a home on Mary Court at Saginaw Bay Estates in Hampton Township near Bay City around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 8, on a report of a stabbing.
But when they arrived at the location and began entering the home, gunfire erupted.
Officers were able to safely shelter inside and identified a subject on the other side of the street as the shooter. Residents in the trailer with police were instructed to get into the rear of the building to avoid gunfire.
Hampton police then called for help from the Michigan State Police Emergency Services. Troopers with the Michigan State Police's Third District responded with a bearcat-style vehicle, authorities said in an update on the case, and helped transport the stabbing victim, residents and Hampton Twp. officers out of the trailer.
The suspect continued to shoot at officers with a revolver, the department added. Officers then returned fire and struck the suspect. He was cared for at the scene by medical personnel before being transported to McLaren Bay Region.
His condition is unknown at this time.
MSP's Lt. Kim Vetter confirmed that the stabbing victim survived the incident and was transported to a local hospital where she was treated and released.
No officers were hurt during the incident and no other residents were reported injured.
"Currently, the MSP Crime Lab and detectives remain on scene," troopers said just before 8 a.m.
In addition to MSP, Hampton Twp. officers were assisted by Bay County Sheriff's Office, Bay City Public Safety and Essexville Public Safety.
No other details were released by police as their investigation continues.
