DETROIT (WWJ) – There’s a new warning about false health claims relating to vaping products.
The folks at the Michigan Poison and Drug Information Center issued a warning earlier this week that says certain products that claim to treat cancer, improve mental health or help with the treatment of chronic breathing conditions are fraudulent and that consumers should stop using those products immediately.
The FDA says that some companies are marketing products they deem “wellness” vaping products containing vitamins and/or essential oils and they are illegally sold with unproven claims. They could be harmful to users, the FDA says.
Currently, no such products are approved by the FDA to prevent or treat any health conditions or diseases.
The MiPDIC wants those using such products to understand that continued use could cause short-term issues like shortness of breath, vomiting, nausea and chest pain.
It could also lead to long-term irreparable damage to the respiratory system and to the lungs, the center says.
The biggest concern for the MiPDIC is that more and more people ages 16-24 are vaping more, while businesses are using flavorings like candy, chocolate and fruit to entice users.
The center also says companies are using an advertising blitz through streaming media and TV to attract new users.
The FDA says some products are using the following fraudulent claims:
• “Fight off tumors and alleviate symptoms of chemotherapy!”
• “It's been used as a [sic] organic asthma remedy, ADHD remedy, and dementia treatment.”
• “Helps prevent a type of anemia called megaloblastic anemia that makes people tired and weak.”
• “Neroli oil… has long been used as a treatment against anxiety and depression, to calm the mind and soothe away tension.”
A full warning on these products can be read on the FDA website.
Officials with MiPDIC are encouraging consumers to know the facts about vaping. More information can be found on their website or by calling 1-800-222-1222.
