DETROIT (WWJ) A young Ohio man died in a motorcycle crash on I-94 on Detroit's west side, police said.
Michigan State Police (MSP) said the Detroit Regional Communication Center began receiving 911 calls of an injury crash with a motorcycle down in the left lane. It happened near Lonyo Street around 11:50 p.m. on Friday, June 27.
According to MSP, the motorcycle driver was traveling at high rates of speed "weaving" in and out of traffic. The motorcycle side-swiped a passenger car traveling in the right lane while trying to pass it on the right shoulder.
The motorcyclist then struck a bridge support, crossed all traffic lanes and hit a median wall.
The driver-- identified as a 22-year-old Lakewood, Ohio man-- was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not released.
No other injuries were reported.
“While we have made progress in the amount of speed related crashes in the last five years, it is preventable crashes like this one that drives home that excessive speed kills," First Lieutenant Mike Shaw said. "We want to remind motorcyclists to drive the speed limit, wear protective gear, including a helmet, and obey all traffic laws. It only takes one poor decision to lose your life.”
