DETROIT (WWJ) - One teen was killed and another is in critical condition after a rollover crash, according to Michigan State Police.
Police received said they calls at 3:50 p.m. on Nov. 5 about a single vehicle that flipped along eastbound I-96 near Fullerton Avenue on Detroit's east side.
Authorities said their preliminary investigation revealed the 16-year-old driver, from Dearborn, attempted to take a curve at an “extremely high rate of speed” when they lost control of the vehicle. They ran up an embankment and hit a utility pole which caused the car to begin to roll.
The passenger, also a 16-year-old from Dearborn, was ejected from the vehicle while it was rolling.
Both were transported to a local hospital. The driver was pronounced dead and the passenger is currently listed in critical condition, officials said.
Police closed the expressway while they investigated the crash.
Michigan State Police F/Lt Mike Shaw said it’s important to wear a seatbelt when in a car and told parents to warn their children of the dangers when speeding.
“It is heartbreaking to lose a young life in a preventable crash,” Shaw said.
Both families were notified about the crash.
