DETROIT (WWJ) - A vacant church on Detroit's west side came crumbling down on Monday evening, officials said.
According to the Detroit Fire Department, the building collapse occurred around 9 p.m. on Oct. 9 in the area of 7000 Fenkell Avenue between Monica Street and Santa Rosa Drive.
Detroit Fire Department Chief James Harris told WWJ's Terri Lee Chandler that no one was inside the church or in the immediate area when it came down.
No injuries were reported.
Officials are working to determine what caused the collapse. Harris said he couldn't confirm whether the church was preparing to undergo renovations as stated in earlier reports.
DTE was at the scene on Monday night to shut off the building's gas line as a preventative measure.
Harris added that clean up efforts are underway with most of the debris expected to be cleared by 12 p.m. on Tuesday.
Officials are asking the public to stay away from the area as crews continue to work the scene.
