OXFORD (WWJ) - A security guard for Oxford Community Schools accidentally fired his weapon into the ceiling while using the bathroom on Monday, district officials said.
According to a statement released by the district, the security guard was using a single-stall staff bathroom at Oxford Middle School when the incident occurred.
The security guard had placed his weapon on a door hook, officials said, but as he reached for it, the gun went off.
"While he was retrieving his weapon from the hook, it caught on the lower portion of the hook and accidently discharged into the cement ceiling," the release stated. "Neither the guard nor anyone else was injured. Due to the location of the bathroom, no one heard the discharge nor was anyone else aware the incident occurred aside from the security guard."
The district said the security guard — who is a retired police officer with 28 years of experience — immediately reported the incident to school administrators. The Oakland County Sheriff's Office was also notified so the accidental discharge could be documented.
The security guard has been employed with the Oxford School district for five years.
"Please know, the district will be investigating this situation and examining the weapons protocols for armed security guards and taking deemed corrective action to prevent incidents like this from happen again," officials said on Monday.
Administrators have beefed up security in the last 10 months since the Nov. 30 shooting at Oxford High School, which claimed the lives of four students – Hana St. Juliana, Madisyn Baldwin, Justin Shilling and Tate Myre – and injured six other students and a teacher.
For the 2022-2023 academic year, district officials have implemented biometric scanner kiosks at three entrances at Oxford High School. Officials also installed NightLock safety shades on door windows to classrooms and employs a dog trained on weapons detection.
The district announced it would be putting armed security guards from a private company in Oxford Community Schools prior to the current school year.
