TROY (WWJ) - A postal carrier checking commercial blue post office mailboxes in Troy came across surprising contents on Wednesday morning after they found two cold, hungry and dehydrated Pitbull mix puppies inside.
Organizers at the No Dogs Left Behind Rescue in Berkley said they were contacted the morning of January 3rd about the puppies -- and they are now safe, warm and receiving veterinary care after their tragic ordeal.
"It happened again," rescuers began in a social media post on Wednesday. "We are three days into 2024. Sadly, in the world of rescue, we are faced with these horror stories every day! Some we can help and others we cannot. But today was the day that we COULD help these babies out."
The organization said the very young male puppies -- estimated to be about six weeks old and barely over the age of weaning from their mother's milk -- were discovered in below-freezing conditions inside a courier box at the Troy Post Office.
Stacey Jerome of No Dog Left Behind told WDIV that the dogs were covered in "feces, urine, and dirt to the point their fur felt crunchy."
They were also dehydrated, hungry -- and very cold.
"These babies were tossed aside with little care as to what would happen next," the rescue said.
No matter the sad circumstances surrounding their rescue, the organization said it is determined to see the pair get their happy ending in adoptive homes.
"NDLB is working to clean and assess these super thin and unkept babies," the rescue added. "They are getting warmed up and bathed as this message is being typed."
The young dogs are due to get veterinary exams, nail trims, their first round of vaccinations, dewormer to treat any common intestinal parasites and of course -- a hearty meal.
Once the dogs are healthy, which Jerome estimated to be in about a month, they will be placed up for adoption.
Later on Wednesday night, the rescue shared photos of the two brindle pups in sweaters, curled up together in a fluffy dog bed, stating the pair were "warm and snuggly by the fire" as news of their story spread.
The rescue, a nonprofit organization, said they rely on donations from the public to help cover vet bills and other needs their dogs might have.
"We truly cannot do this without you and appreciate any and all support you can give at this time to help ensure we are able to place these pups in foster homes and provide the necessary medical attention needed."
