ROCHESTER HILLS (WWJ) -- A Detroit-area parent is suing a local district, claiming the school board president got her fired for speaking out against COVID-19 closures.
Elena Dinverno, who has two kids in the Rochester Community School District, has been outspoken against virtual learning and has criticized the school board on social media.
Concerned about adverse mental health effects of remote learning on students, Dinverno had been advocating for the reopening of schools, largely in two Facebook groups: "RCS Parents for In-Person Education" and "Conservative Parents for Rochester."
Although Dinverno denies being anything but cordial in her posts on social media, she claims the district sent her a cease-and-desist letter, according to ClickOnDetroit.com.
On Monday, the mom-of-two filed a civil lawsuit against the Oakland County district, school board president Kristin Bull and superintendent Robert Shaner, claiming they restricted her free speech.
Diverno also alleges in the 13-page federal document that board president Kristen Bull contacted her employer Blake's Hard Cider, and told her boss that she was participating in a group threatening the school district.
Dinverno denies the allegations, but she was fired from her job as the company's marketing director. She had been employed with the company since 2019.
No comment has been made from the Rochester school board at this time.
