SUMMIT TWP. (WWJ) -- A man was shot and wounded by Jackson County deputies, shortly after he was identified as a person of interest in his mother's murder.

Jackson County Sheriff Gary Schuette said his department was initially called Sunday evening to do a welfare check on 55-year-old Karen Tobin at a home in Summit Township, which is south of Jackson.

"She lived at the address, and the caller had indicated that the son — David McClure, a 33-year-old male — had called the caller, and made a comment that something bad had happened to his mother," Schuette told WWJ Newsradio 950's Beth Fisher.

Deputies found Tobin found dead in an apparent homicide, Schuette said, before McClure returned to the scene.

"He was driving a vehicle at a high rate of speed and he rammed two patrol vehicles that were situated around the scene to protect it," the sheriff said. "He then exited the vehicle; he had a weapon in his hand."

Schuette said McClure charged at the deputies, while holding a knife, and two of the deputies opened fire, striking McClure.

McClure was taken to Henry Ford Allegiance Hospital in Jackson where he is being treated for gunshot wounds. His condition is not known at this time.

The deputies who fired the shots have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is protocol following an officer-involved shooting.

Schuette said while the murder investigation is ongoing, Michigan State Police are investigating the shooting.

"We summoned the Michigan State Police to come in and conduct a separate criminal investigation to make a determination as to whether or not the deputies acted lawfully," Schuette said. "We are also running a parallel investigation internally to make a determination whether or not the deputies followed all internal protocols during the incident as well."

Authorities have not said how Tobin was killed.
