Pipe bombs found in box of tools donated to Northern Michigan thrift shop; State police investigating

HARBOR SPRINGS (WWJ) — An investigation is underway in Northern Michigan after employees at a thrift store found pipe bombs in a box that had been donated.

The discovery was made around 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6, according to Michigan State Police. That’s when troopers were called to the New Beginnings Thrift Shop in Harbor Springs.

A worker picked up a donated box full of tools and moved them around to see what else was in the box, MSP officials said. They found several items believed to be pipe bombs inside the box.

The MSP Bomb Squad and an MSP Canine Team were also called to the scene.

The MSP Bomb Squad took an X-ray of the pipe bombs and found one of them containws a fuse and powder. The MSP Bomb Squad was able to render it safe and dispose of the bomb.

Authorities conducted an explosive sweep of the store and surrounding area and found no other explosive devices.

MSP investigators are still looking into the case.

Officials did not say whether investigators have identified a suspect in the case or if the store employees know who dropped off the box containing the tools and pipe bombs.
