(WWJ) Three people are dead after a small plane crashed into a home in Oakland County's Lyon Township.

Shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office said Lyon Township Police and Fire were at the scene of the crash, in the 57600 block of Russet, in the area of Grand River Ave. and Pontiac Trail.

Officials said all residents were reported to be out of the house, which was fully engulfed in flames.

A short time later, the sheriff's office said three people who were on the plane were confirmed dead, including the pilot. In a statement, the HBA (Home Builders Association of Southeastern Michigan) announced "with deepest sorrow" that the victims were its former president, David Compo, his wife Michelle and their college-age son Dawson.

Compo's term as president of HBA had ended on December 31. His family was on their way back from Canton, Georgia and was bound for Oakland Southwest Airport in New Hudson when the plane crashed, less than one mile away from its destination.

The HBA remembers Compo as a life-long architect who started drawing plans for his parents' building company by the age of 15 and a mentor.

"His passion was skilled workforce development, getting young people into the trade. He was going to do that in February (2020) and of course, we know what happened in March. 2021 was going to be his year," his friend Mike Stoskopf and HBA CEO said live on WWJ.

Compo and his company, Compo Builders Inc. which he co-owned with his brother, has overseen the building of over 600 homes for Michigan families, as well as hundreds of remodeling projects.

He is survived by his mother, Janet, and brother and sister-in-law, Christopher and Lisa.

No information about the type of plane has been released.

It's unclear what caused the crash, as the investigation continues. Compo was an 'experienced pilot,' according to the HBA's statement.

The FAA has been contacted.
