Single engine plane crashes into woods during take off in Mid-Michigan

State troopers said the occupants of a small aircraft that crashed into the woods in Eaton County were lucky after they walked away from the scene with no injuries on Tuesday evening.

EATON RAPIDS TWP (WWJ) - State troopers said the occupants of a small aircraft that crashed into the woods in Eaton County were lucky after they walked away from the scene with no injuries on Tuesday evening.

Michigan State Police said they were called to the area of the crash involving a single engine plane just northwest of Smith Road and Columbia Hwy in Eaton Rapids Twp. just after 6 p.m.

According to MSP, the aircraft was taking off from the Skyway Estates Airport roughly 15 miles southwest of Lansing when the crash occurred.

Photos from the scene posted by troopers showed the plane nose down in foliage and kept in position by pine trees.

Twenty five gallons of plane fuel was recovered from the plane by Shroyers Hazmat; MSP said no fuel leak occurred.

The two people who were in the plane at the time of the crash were unhurt and able to get themselves out.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating into the cause of the crash.

No other details were made available by authorities.
