Old pocket knife uncovered at historic Colonial Michilimackinac site

MACKINAC CITY, Mich. (WWJ) -- Curators for Mackinac State Historic Parks say they made an exciting find at an archeology dig site on the Fourth of July.

An old pocket knife was found over the weekend at the site near the Southeast Rowhouse at Colonial Michilimackinac.

Dr. Lynn Evans, Curator of Archaeology for Mackinac State Historic Parks, says a dig uncovered a 3.5-inch-long pocket knife, also known as a clasp knife. It was found near a post in the central root cellar, officials said.

Evans says crews are still unsure whether the blade was French or British, and still don't know exactly how old it is.

Crews have uncovered numerous artifacts in recent years while excavating the Southeast Rowhouse. Other recent finds include a Compagnie des Indes lead seal dating between 1717 and 1769, a brass sleeve button with an intaglio bust on it, and a potential structural post dating all the way back to the original 1715 fort.

Crews have also found an engraved Jesuit trade ring, as well as a brass serpentine side plate for a British trade gun.
