DETROIT (WWJ) - A car crashed into a building on Detroit's east side early this morning, leaving the driver dead, according to police.

Detroit Police and Fire Departments responded to a crash around 2 a.m. at a strip mall in the area of East Seven Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue. Investigators say a vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it crashed into the building. There was debris scattered all over the area.

Authorities said firefighters were able to remove the driver from the vehicle after some difficulty due to the airbags deploying. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was the only person inside the car.

Unconfirmed reports say people who were on the scene during the time of the crash may have damaged a firetruck.

Police said they are still investigating the crash and what occurred after.
