UTICA (WWJ) -- A 41-year-old man is in police custody after ramming a police car and leading multiple law enforcement agencies on a chase Monday afternoon that ended with authorities finding him hiding in a Macomb County field.
Michigan State Police officials say it all started shortly before 1 p.m. when Macomb County Dispatch issued an alert for a vehicle that had allegedly been involved in a retail fraud.
The driver, police said, rammed a Utica Police patrol car and sped away after the alleged retail fraud.
Utica officers pursued the vehicle, but terminated the chase at M-52 and 28 Mile Road.
A state trooper on patrol in the area of 32 Mile and Romeo Plank Roads then saw the car headed eastbound on 32 Mile and tried to make a traffic stop, but the driver fled again.
The chase finally ended near 32 Mile and Lowe Plank Road, where Macomb County deputies deployed stop sticks and the driver crashed into a ditch.
The driver fled the scene on foot and the passenger stayed on-scene, police said. The passenger was compliant was taken to McLaren Macomb Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
MSP officials say a citizen spotted the fleeing suspect in a large field near Lowe Plank and Armada Ridge Road in Richmond Township.
Richmond PD, and MCSO deputies responded, and after a short foot pursuit, the suspect was taken into custody. He was taken a local hospital for treatment of injuries he suffered during the crash.
Authorities say he was turned over to Utica PD and will face charges, while MSP officials are going to submit an investigative report for their own charges.
