DEARBORN (WWJ) - Two carjackings in Garden City spurred on a police pursuit into Dearborn Friday morning, but the chase ended for one driver who lost control and crashed through a cemetery.

Now city officials and family members are left to clean up the mess.

WWJ's Mike Campbell reported live from the scene at Mount Kelly Cemetery off Cherry Hill and North Elizabeth, just east of Telegraph, where several plots were damaged, headstones were broken, fencing was run through and vehicle parts were strewn about the ground.

According to Campbell, the damage was the end result of a police chase after a pair of carjackings were reported out of Garden City earlier in the night. Authorities pursued the suspects into Dearborn where it abruptly ended in the cemetery when one car flipped over and crashed through the property.

"I should say it ended here for one of the drivers that couldn't make the turn," Campbell said.

Corporal Dan Bartok from the Dearborn Police Department spoke to Campbell about clean-up efforts in the cemetery, but remained tight-lipped about the investigation which is being lead by detectives with the Garden City Police Department.

"As you can see, there was some damage to the cemetery the fence line in some of the cemetery plots were damaged," he said.

Around 10 a.m., multiple people gathered to help restore the damaged parts of the property. Among those assessing familial plots is Maureen Whitaker, whose late parents were laid to rest at Mount Kelly.

"The headstones are broken, but I think they can be put back in place and we can get back to looking good again," she told Campbell. "And that's the goal."

The City's Public Works Department was also on site to fix a utility pole that was broken in half when it was hit. A fire hydrant was also taken out and stones were moved around in the incident.

Police did manage to arrest the one suspect who crashed through Mount Kelly, but it is unclear if the second suspect was caught.

There were no serious injuries reported in the police chase or car crash.

Detectives are continuing to investigate. No other details have been made public.
