DETROIT (WWJ) -- Investigators gathered en masse on Detroit's east side on Tuesday in connection with the search for some missing people.

Late Tuesday morning, there was was significant police presence at Pingree Park, between E. Warren and E. Canfield, with dozens of officers, along with firetrucks and EMS on scene.

Several local police departments are represented on the scene, including local, state and federal law enforcement.

The Detroit Police Department confirmed to WWJ Newsradio 950 that they are working a "joint multi-agency operation to follow up on missing persons cases."

Commander Rebecca McKay, of the DPD's Major Crimes Unit, explained that the park is just the first location as part of a multi-area operation planned to continue over the next several months, leading into the fall, trying to solve cases of missing persons.

McKay declined to say what case it was that led them to that particular park, while speaking to WWJ's Jon Hewett and other reporters.

McKay said these searches, going forward, will be primarily in and around abandoned homes in the city.

They're calling it "Operation Block."

"The operation is to go through vacant lots, vacant homes, and to clear those areas for any signs of missing persons that are out there today," said McCay.

No new details are being released about any particular missing persons cases as this time.
