WESTLAND (WWJ) – Police in Westland say a crash involving a train and a Tesla Wednesday morning did not involve the electric vehicle’s self-driving system.
The crash happened around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday along Merriman Road, south of Michigan Avenue.
Police officials tell WWJ the driver of a Tesla Model 3 struck an oncoming Amtrak train.
Lt. Robert Wilkie told WWJ the Tesla had “very minor damage,” and it didn’t appear the car was far enough in front of the train “to cause serious injury that is usually consistent with a train vs. car accident.”
Officials have not released any details about the moments leading up to the crash, but said their early investigation, including a statement from the driver, “led us to determine that the accident was a result of driver error and did not involve the vehicle’s self-driving functions.”
The driver complained of minor injury, but declined medical treatment. No one on the Amtrak train was injured, according to Wilkie.
Authorities have not released the driver’s name or age.
The incident remains under investigation.
