(WWJ) Michigan State Police say a homicide investigation is underway into the death of a man at the Detroit Detention Center over the weekend.

MSP was informed at around 9 a.m. Saturday that a 61-year-old man had died while in custody at the DDC lockup, on Mound Rd. The man was found dead by an officer in his cell, police said.

Monday morning, MSP said members of the Homicide Task Force — a combined task force of MSP and DPD detectives — are now investigating the incident.

Authorities so far are not sharing any details about a suspected cause of death, or whether they believe there was foul play.

Detectives will be reviewing video and audio, interviewing witnesses and are awaiting results of an autopsy by the Wayne County Medical Examiner.

Once the investigation is completed, police said the report will be sent to a prosecutor for review and a decision on any charges.

Chris Gautz, a spokesman for the Michigan Department of Corrections, said the man had been arrested Thursday by Detroit Police on a charge of drug possession. The man's name was not released.
