ORION TWP. (WWJ) – Police in Oakland County are searching for a driver that caused a bizarre crash early Tuesday morning that left a Lake Orion man hospitalized.

It all unfolded around 7:45 a.m. in the area of Lapeer and Waldon Roads, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials say a vehicle was headed north on Lapeer when it veered into the median and hit a road sign, dislodging it and sending it airborne.

The sign flew into oncoming traffic on the other side of Lapeer and went through the windshield of a 2013 Volkswagen Passat, striking a 31-year-old Lake Orion man.

The Passant veered off the road and came to rest against a tree near Waldon, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Lake Orion man was taken to the hospital and was listed in serious but stable condition. Officials say he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Authorities have no information about the vehicle or the driver that hit the sign, but are asking anyone who may have witnessed the wild incident to come forward.

Anyone who knows something is asked to call the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office at (248) 858-4950.
