DEARBORN (WWJ) – The search is on for a group of suspected vandals who damaged the Dearborn Hills Golf Course last week.
Dearborn police officials say five people damaged the grounds and city equipment at the public course in the early morning hours of Friday, Aug. 11. While one suspect has been identified, police are asking for help identifying the other four.
Surveillance footage captured around 1 a.m. shows the suspects entering the course. They proceeded to tamper with several golf carts before “driving the vehicles onto the course at high speed and driving the carts in ‘donuts.’”
Police officials say the donuts severely damaged several greens in the process.
“We take pride in maintaining our public parks, facilities and greenspaces, not only for Dearborn residents but for those who choose to visit our city,” Dearborn Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud said in a press release. “I am disheartened by this attempt to damage the historic grounds of Dearborn Hills, which is known to be the oldest public golf course in our state.”
In total, the incident led to several thousands of dollars in damages to the golf course greens, the golf carts, and the grounds.
“These individuals’ careless actions not only harmed City property and a historic public course, it undid the hours of hard work and care that goes into maintaining our shared public spaces,” Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said. “We ask the community to please reach out with any information that can help us locate and hold accountable any individuals involved in this incident.”
Authorities are asking anyone who recognizes the suspects or knows something about the vandalism to call the Dearborn Police Department at 313-943-3345.
Earlier this summer vandals damaged another Dearborn golf course, driving golf courts on the greens and through the bunkers at Warren Valley.
It was not clear whether the incidents were related.
