PORT HURON (WWJ) — A suspect is in custody following a massive drug bust near the Blue Water Bridge earlier this week.

It was part of what St. Clair County Sheriff Mat King told WWJ Newsradio 950's Jon Hewett is an ongoing investigation. The bust was the result of a tip from the public that there was a large amount of drugs on a vehicle heading towards the county.

Just after 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15, authorities stopped a semi-truck on Pine Grove Avenue, just outside the border crossing at the bridge. King said investigators believe the shipment was headed for Canada.

During that stop authorities found about 370 lbs. of cocaine inside the truck, totaling an estimated $16.5 million.

King said this is the largest drug bust in the history of the St. Clair County Sheriff's Drug Task Force.

Authorities have not released the suspect's name or age. King said while the suspect is "of Middle Eastern descent," he was not sure whether he was a U.S. citizen.

King believes the massive amount of cocaine came across the Mexico-US border at some point, but investigators are not sure exactly where it originated.

Port Huron police, Michigan State Police and Homeland Security assisted in the investigation.
