(WWJ) - As people check off their holiday shopping lists, police are offering tips on staying safe both online and in stores.
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said it's important to be aware of your surroundings when going in and out of stores.
There is an increase in crime during this time because people are carrying more cash and there are valuables in vehicles and homes while people shop for gifts, Bouchard said. There are things shoppers can do to keep themselves safe this holiday season.
Tips include:
- Making sure you park in a visible area. If you're shopping when it's dark, try to park under or near a light.
- If you are parked away from the store, have your keys in your hand and keep an eye on your surroundings.
- If you're going to multiple stores, drop things off in the car and store them in the truck or the back out of sight.
- When shopping online, only use websites you know and trust.
- Close out of the browser after the transaction so your payment information is erased.
"Porch pirates" are also a bigger issue during the holidays, Bouchard said. He suggested having deliveries put in a less visible or harder to reach area to deter people from grabbing packages. Having a neighbor pick up deliveries and either keep them in their house or put them in your house can also discourage people from snatching deliveries.
Bouchard said that porch piracy is larceny and can be reported to law enforcement.
