Police say pursuit from Wyandotte to Detroit leaves driver of alleged stolen vehicle dead

WYANDOTTE (WWJ) - An investigation is underway after a fatal car accident involving a stolen car, police said.

Wyandotte Police said they were notified from a license plate reader camera that a stolen vehicle was in the area of Goddard Road and 12th Street on Dec. 26 at approximately 2:30 a.m.

The 2009 Ford Focus was reported stolen from Grosse Pointe Park on Dec. 25.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle on Fort Street, but authorities say the suspect fled by driving at a high rate of speed north on Fort Street, at which point they entered Detroit.

Police say the suspect didn't stop at a red light at the intersection of Fort Street and Schafer Highway and hit another vehicle.

The driver of the other vehicle was taken to a local hospital and is listed in stable condition.

The suspect, a man in his 30's, had to be extracted from the vehicle with the help of the Detroit Fire Department due to the extensive damage from the crash. He was also transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival, police said.

The suspect has not been identified. The Wyandotte and Detroit Police Departments are working to identify him and notify his family.

The Detroit Police Fatal Squad is investigating the crash, and authorities say more information will be provided at a later date.
