LENOX TWP. (WWJ) — The search for Ashley Elkins continued Monday as authorities reportedly searched a Macomb County landfill, looking for the 30-year-old Warren mother of two.
Elkins has not been seen since Thursday, Jan. 2 when she left home to run errands. Last week her ex-boyfriend, 32-year-old Deandre Booker, was arrested and charged with lying to police in connection with her disappearance.
Roseville Police Chief Mitch Berlin told WWJ Newsradio 950’s Darrylin Horne and other reporters the police department and a dozen other agencies searched the facility on 29 Mile Road in Lenox Township.
Berlin said crews were using bulldozers to go through the landfill, with others following close behind, using hand tool to sift through the dirt and debris in search of evidence related to Elkins' disappearance.
Authorities will return to the landfill to continue the search on Tuesday morning, Berlin said.
"We're confident we'll find the evidence we're looking for," Berlin said, noting there's a roughly 16-acre parcel of the landfill police are particularly focused on.
Horne spoke with members of Elkins’ family, who said police had told them prior to Monday's search they would be searching an undisclosed location on Monday.
Police officials previously said the investigation found Elkins may have been at an apartment within the Hampton Court Apartments in Roseville, where Booker lives. Last Tuesday, authorities "determined that there was a strong possibility of foul play involved in this incident," leading to a search of Booker's apartment.
That’s the same day police recovered Elkins' in the area of 13 Mile and Little Mack, according to police. Police also seized a trash dumpster from her ex-boyfriend's apartment complex.
Last week attorney Maurice Morton, Elkins’ uncle, told reporters the family believes Elkins was murdered, likely at Booker’s home.
