SHELBY TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Police in Shelby Township are asking for the public’s help in identifying those responsible for vandalism after equipment was discovered damaged at Utica Cemetery.

Authorities said the two incidents of vandalism were discovered by cemetery workers at around 4 p.m. on Jan. 5, and at 8 a.m. the next day on Jan. 6 at the property located off Shelby Road, south of 21 Mile Road.

Police police Sgt. Mark Benedettini said a worker came to the cemetery during the first occurrence and noticed that a portable toilet had been toppled over, and some water pipes connected to a building on the property had been damaged.

The following day, an excavator at the cemetery had two cab windows smashed in and the control panel was destroyed.

An investigation into the incidents found there was no other damage and none of the gravestones had been disturbed.

The Utica Cemetery is one of the state's oldest gravesites and is the historic resting place of 19th century settlers who died over 200 years ago.

Anyone who may have seen any suspicious people or vehicles in the area between those dates and times are asked to contact Detective Thomas Gibbs at 586-731-2121 ext. 367 or email at tgibbs@shelbytwp.org.
