DETROIT (WWJ) -- Police said a shooting on Detroit's west side led to a barricaded gunman situation after a victim ran to a local gas station for help, early Monday morning.

According to Detroit Police Captain John Stewart, officers responded at around 2:30 a.m. to a call about shots fired on Whittier and Hayes Rd. They found the wounded victim at the Sunoco station, but then received another call about a shooting at a nearby home.

Officials found evidence that two scenes were connected, Stewart said, and it was believed that the suspect in shooting had run into the home, on Roxbury St.

Stewart told reporters the DPD began its barricaded gunman protocol after the people inside the home wouldn't talk to police.

The standoff lasted for hours, Stewart said, as police surrounded the home.

"We continued to make contact until, eventually, a person started to exit the location," Stewart said. "Unfortunately, when people were trying to exit the location we had a dog exit the location and run toward officers. And for officer safety there was a shot fired at the animal. The animal then fled back inside the location."

The standoff ended at around 7 a.m.

Police did not have an update on the condition of the dog, later Monday morning. "We're going to render aid to him as soon as we clear and make sure the location is secure," Stewart said.

Stewart said six people have been detained, as the investigation continues.

It is believed that the person at the gas station was shot at the home, and then ran to the gas station, he said. As for whether or not the shooter is among the six people detained, Stewart said police are still working to confirm that.
