DETROIT (WWJ) – A man is behind bars and a Michigan State Police trooper is injured after chasing down and tackling a suspect who stole allegedly from the Nike store in downtown Detroit on Tuesday.
It all happened around 4 p.m. when troopers tried to stop the man who allegedly stole about $2,000 worth of merchandise from the Nike store on Woodward Avenue, near Grand River Avenue.
As troopers approached the suspect on foot near Woodward and Park – about two blocks north, near Grand Circus Park – he took off running.
Troopers eventually caught up to him near Elizabeth Street, just across from Comerica Park, and they were able to take him to the ground and handcuff him.
One trooper suffered a “deep laceration” to his left elbow, cuts to his right elbow, and a minor injury to his left knee during the incident, according to MSP. He was taken to the hospital to get stitches.
The suspect, a 35-year-old from Detroit, was not hurt. They are being held at the Detroit Detention Center and his name has not been released, pending prosecutor review.
Authorities did not say what Nike merchandise was allegedly stolen from the store.
