DETROIT (WWJ) — A woman is hospitalized after jumping out of a rideshare car on a Detroit freeway because she thought she was being kidnapped.

Michigan State Police troopers were called to eastbound I-96 near I-94 around 4:45 p.m. Sunday after getting calls of a car and pedestrian crash. While troopers were on their way to the scene, they learned it had been reported as a kidnapping, officials said.

Witnesses confirmed to police that the woman, later identified as a 31-year-old from Detroit, had jumped from a black car in the left lane of the freeway.

As troopers were investigating the alleged kidnapping, police got a call from a ride-share driver who said a woman had jumped out of his vehicle after she told him she didn't like the route he was taking to bring her downtown.

The woman was taken to the hospital, where she was alert and in stable condition.

During an interview, investigators determined she was under the influence of marijuana and "had anxiety because she saw a sign that said Port Huron and panicked, thinking he was taking her somewhere else," MSP officials said on X, formerly Twitter.

"This woman was very lucky she wasn't seriously hurt during this incident," MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said in the post.

MSP officials say the investigation has been "closed as unfounded" and the woman was turned over to her family.
