(WWJ) -- A Pontiac woman accused of stabbing her own grandfather while he slept is facing up to life in prison if convicted.

Authorities say 27-year-old Shanitra Lashay Seay allegedly stabbed her 75-year-old grandfather Sunday while he slept in his apartment at the Phoenix Place Apartments, located at 47521 Woodward Avenue in Pontiac.

The grandfather had allowed Seay to stay at his apartment, because she'd told him she had no place else to stay, according to police.

Oakland County Sheriff's deputies were called to the apartment complex shortly after midnight on Sunday on the report of a woman that was bleeding, carrying a knife and saying someone tried to kill her. When deputies arrived, they found Seay in the lobby of the apartment complex, but she was not carrying a knife.

Seay told authorities she had stabbed a man who was trying to kill her, but when they interviewed the victim, he said he was sleeping when she attacked him.

The grandfather was found lying on the floor of the apartment with multiple lacerations to his head, face, arms, tongue, chest and cheek. EMS personnel rendered aid at the scene before taking him to McLaren Oakland Hospital, where he is in critical condition.

Seay was arraigned on the charge of assault with intent to murder on Tuesday in 50th District Court. Her bond was set at $70,000 cash/surety bond or 10%. Seay would be granted release if she posts $7,000.

If convicted, Seay could face up to life in prison. Her next court appearance is set for May 20.
