DETROIT (WWJ) – Porch pirates are out and about during the holiday season, and one Detroit home has fallen victim for a second time.

Detroit police are asking for tips finding the culprit after a package containing household items was stolen from a home in the area of Dexter and Sturtevant around 5 p.m. on Dec. 16.

Authorities did not say what was in the package. A surveillance camera captured a person with long, red hair wearing a gray sweatsuit standing on the porch at the time of the theft.

The theft came less than two months after someone else stole Amazon packages from the same home around 3 p.m. on Oct. 28. It was not clear how many packages were stolen or what they contained.

A suspect wearing a heavy coat with their hair in a bun was seen carrying several boxes off the porch.

Police officials say in addition to these separate cases, there have been “several other cases” reported, but no photos are available. It is not clear when the other thefts happened.

Detroit police officials are asking anyone who recognizes the suspects or knows something about the thefts to call the 10th Precinct Detective Unit at 313-596-1040 or 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

A recent report says so-called porch pirates have stolen nearly $20 billion worth of packages over the last year.

“The more packages left for longer periods of time on a porch, the more likely they are to be stolen. As the Christmas gift season gets into full swing, there will be a significant increase in packages on a porch,” said Dr. Ben Stickle, an expert on criminal justice.
