WESTLAND (WWJ) -- No one was hurt, but police were called in to investigate after talk about a gun led to a lockdown at Westland John Glenn High School.

According to an email from district officials, "all students and staff are safe" following the scare on Wednesday, at the school on Marquette St., east of Newburgh Rd.

Wednesday morning, John Glenn students alerted school administration to a potential threat involving a classmate possibly bringing a gun to school, officials said.

In response, a "soft lockdown" went into effect during which students were instructed to remain in their classrooms, and visitor access to the building was temporarily suspended while students were questioned and searched.

Despite some rumors swirling on social media, there was no gunfire at the school.

The lockdown has since been lifted and "all students and staff are safe," according to an email from administrators to John Glenn families, who thanked Westland Police for their quick response.

Wednesday afternoon, Acting Superintendent Jennifer Curry issued the following statement regarding the incident:

"Earlier today, as a precautionary measure, John Glenn High School and the William D. Ford Career-Technical Center were placed on a soft lockdown while the Westland Police Department conducted an investigation. At no time were students or staff in any danger, and all remained safely in their classrooms throughout the process.

"The police have since determined that there was no credible threat to our students, staff, or facilities. Ensuring the safety and security of our school community is our highest priority. We extend our sincere appreciation to the Westland Police Department for their prompt and professional response."

Officials said the school would have normal dismissal at 2 p.m.
