Powerball expected to add third weekly drawing on Mondays

Monday drawings are expected to begin in late August.

(WWJ) -- Powerball players can soon expect a third chance to win big every week.

A spokesperson with the Michigan Lottery tells WWJ weekly Monday Powerball drawings will begin on August 23.

While there has been no confirmation from the Multi-State Lottery Association, which runs the Powerball, an official announcement is expected to happen sometime next month.

Powerball drawings are currently held on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with tickets costing $2. The jackpots begin at $20 million and get progressively larger after every drawing without a winner.

Jake Harris of the Michigan Lottery says there are also plans to add a $1 double-play feature, giving players a chance to win a much smaller prize on a second set of numbers.

Harris also says a big reason the MSLA decided to add a third weekly drawing was to differentiate their game from Mega Millions, the other large bi-weekly jackpot lottery game.

"Obviously, players like the chance to win jackpots, and this gives players a chance to win another day each week," he told WWJ.

The decision to add a third weekly drawing comes as Powerball sales numbers are trending upward once again after two straight years of decline, according to a report from the Detroit News.

There has been no official word from Mega Millions, but many are expecting a third weekly drawing to also be added for that game.

Powerball and Mega Millions were considered "rivals" until 2010, when an agreement was reached, allowing states to sell tickets for both games.

Monday drawings are expected to begin in late August.
