JACKSON (WWJ) An inmate has died after a violent fight at a state prison near Jackson.
The violence broke out at the G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility Friday morning. The Michigan Department of Corrections said Deandre Jackson, 22, was stabbed multiple times during the melee and died of his injuries at the hospital.
The Detroit Free Press reports as many as 13 prisoners were involved in the fight that broke out in the breakfast line around 7:30 in the Level 4 Housing Unit, one of the most secure parts of the prison.
Jackson was serving a nearly 7-to-40-year sentence for an armed robbery in Kalamazoo County in 2014.
A second prisoner and a staff member were treated for minor injuries. Michigan State Police are leading the investigation.
