ANN ARBOR (WWJ) -- An investigation is underway in Ann Arbor after pro-Palestinian flyers were left at the scene of vandalism at the University of Michigan over the weekend.
The UM Division of Public Safety and Security got a call from Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum staff Sunday morning after thousands of blooming flowers were cut off of around 250 of its peony plants.
Director of the gardens, Tony Kolenic, said the flowers at the WE Upjohn Peony Garden have been nurtured over generations.
"What happened here was an act of disregard, not just for the garden but for the community, and really, to life itself," Kolenic said. "And yet, this is a resilient garden — it will bloom, it will be fine. And we will continue to honor this space and all it means to this community and all those who find peace and joy here."
Campus police said they are working to identify a suspect, or suspects connected with what they're calling a "criminal incident."
Police said group or organization name was identified or otherwise has taken credit for this incident, although some papers were left behind.
Officials said roughly 100 flyers were found at the scene with messages including, "Palestinian lives deserve to be cared for, more than these flowers," and "Plant Live Don't Matter, Human Lives Do."
In a written statement the University of Michigan calls the vandalism "wholly unacceptable."
