DETROIT (WWJ) -- There’s a new proposal to move the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix from Belle Isle back to the streets of downtown.
Race officials showed the plan to the Detroit City Council at their meeting on Tuesday night.
"An annual summertime racing festival on the streets of Detroit would represent a connection to the rich heritage of the Grand Prix," officials said in a statement.
Initially held in downtown Detroit from 1982-1991, the race was moved to Belle Isle in 1992, which has caused controversy among those who say the event disrupts the island’s natural landscape and put limitations on park-goers.
The new plan would bring the race back to downtown starting in 2023 -- making a loop along Jefferson near Hart Plaza and around the Renaissance Center.
The proposed race route would be similar to the very first Grand Prix held in Detroit 32 years ago.
City Council will consider the plan at their next meeting on Friday.
