DETROIT (WWJ) -- The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy is seeking public comment on proposed air permit changes for Marathon Petroleum and MPLX in Detroit.

Marathon wants approval for new railcar fuel operations and changes to existing permit conditions at its refinery on the city's southwest side. MPLX, meanwhile, wants permission to use a different vapor control device during certain fuel loading operations.

Projects like these need an air permit before construction can start. The permits are meant to limit pollution and make sure companies meet air quality and health standards. They also require companies to monitor emissions, keep records, and complete testing to prove they’re following the rules.

EGLE says the permits would ensure the air quality and health standards before any construction begins. Residents can submit comments through June 11th or attend a public hearing on June 4th.

The meeting will be held at the Kemeny Center on South Fort Street in Detroit.
