Remains of Washtenaw County Jane Doe identified 38 years after homicide, officials seeking tips

WASHTENAW COUNTY (WWJ) - Officials in Washtenaw County have made some headway in a 38-year-old cold case murder after they positively identified the remains of a Jane Doe victim.

According to the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office, the unknown remains were found in the area of MacArthur Blvd. and Stamford Road in Superior Township in 1985. The body went unidentified until 2023, when the body was identified as Cheryl Coates.

Authorities hope the public may be able to help provide additional details about the incident, which is believed to have occurred sometime between January 1984 and January 1985.

Deputies said Coates was known to frequent or live in the Southfield and/or Detroit area.

"WCSO is seeking any information anyone may have regarding the circumstances of her death," the sheriff's office said.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office Detective Roberts (robertsb@washtenaw.org) or the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office Tip Line at 734-973-7711.
