(WWJ) -- U.S Rep. Rashida Tlaib has secured the Democratic nomination for the newly drawn 12th Congressional District on Wednesday, defeating three challengers.
Tlaib was up against Lathrup Village Mayor Kelly Garrett, former state Rep. Shanelle Jackson and Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey -- who had strong name recognition in the city.
Tlaib led Winfrey 64% to 20% with more than a third of the expected Democratic vote counted by 12:30 a.m., which was about the time the race was called by the Associated Press.
Currently, the 46-year-old represents Michigan’s 13th district, but in November she will be moving to the 12th through redistricting.
Tlaib was first elected in 2018.
