(WWJ) - Michigan reigns supreme when it comes to energy jobs, according to a newly released U.S. Energy and Employment Jobs Report and state officials pledged to keep the momentum going.
The state saw almost 35,500 energy jobs added from 2020 to 2021 -- the highest amount of sector jobs out of any other state. Officials said the growing number of energy jobs was boosted almost 10%.
Michigan’s 393,207 energy workers make up 5% of all U.S. energy jobs and almost 10% of all state jobs.
"Michigan’s economy is on the move," Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said of the report on Thursday. "Unemployment is low, small business growth is booming, and we had strong job growth last year."
The governor vowed to keeping investing in the "future of mobility and clean energy," while combating climate change at the same time to keep Michigan competitive for future business investments and economic developments.
The report is a combination of employer surveys, officials said, to track growth across certain electric power generation, fuels, energy efficiency and motor vehicles.
Susan Corbin, Director of the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity, said her department remains committed to "making sure everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed in these in-demand, rewarding careers in the energy sector and beyond."
Officials said the report was complied by a number of employer surveys across several major areas, to include power generation and transmission, fuels, energy efficiency, and motor vehicles.
Whitmer said her office remains on track to creating clean energy jobs to help grow the state's economy. One of the biggest goals set by Whitmer is to ensure "all State of Michigan facilities will be powered by 100% renewable energy by 2025 and worked to responsibly deploy solar and electric vehicle charging stations on state-owned property and land."
Michigan has seen a number of economic development projects within the last year, including a $7 billion investment from GM, a $1.7 billion investment from electric vehicle battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution and a $2 billion investment from Ford.
