(WWJ) An academic building on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing was shut down for the day amid a police investigation. Now one person is in custody in connection with the investigation.
Parents of Michigan State University students said they received a text message on Thursday (9/3) informing them that Berkey Hall was temporarily closed for a reported threat.
MSU said in a posted that this closer is "out of an abundance of caution," and that classes held in Berkey Hall would be removed to remote online instruction while law enforcement assesses a reported potential threat.
Officials said a medical professional reported the threat to the MSU Department of Police and Safety, which led to them closing the lecture hall out of an abundance of caution.
Coordinating with other agencies, authorities traced the person who made the threat to Washtenaw County.
They were taken into protective custody, in accordance with the Michigan Mental Health Code, officials said.
MSU said the building would reopen on Friday.
MSU said there is no indication of a threat to the broader campus at this time, and that university is working closely with law enforcement on the ongoing investigation.
Berkey Hall was one of two buildings on the MSU campus where a 2023 mass shooting took place. Three students were killed, and five others were injured.
