Barricaded gunman situation at Shelby Twp. apartment complex ends peacefully

(WWJ) Residents at a Macomb County apartment complex have returned home after being evacuated as a result of a police standoff Monday.

Shelby Township Police were called to the Lakeside Park Apartments, on Hayes Rd. near 21 Mile Rd., shortly after 11:30 a.m. Monday on the report of a man who was possibly armed, holed up in an apartment.

Police have not released many details about the incident, but did say the suspect surrendered peacefully after about four hours of hiding in the apartment. It was unclear what prompted the situation or whether the suspect is facing charges.

No injuries were reported during the ordeal.

Management at the apartment complex told residents to stay inside, but there were some residents in the immediate area of the incident who were asked to evacuate.

One resident, Angel, told WWJ's Jon Hewett there were about 10 police cars in the area.

"They had the negotiators, and they said it was a barricaded gunman, so they had to evacuate that building over there and for us to stay inside and don’t come out if we don’t have to," she said.

"It happens everywhere, but when it's close to home, it kind of puts you on edge because you don't know what to expect," Angel said. "You don't know what you're around or what a person is capable of doing."
